Welcome to 4th Grade! We are going to have a wonderful year! Your child is in my homeroom and will receive ELA and Social Studies instruction from me. Math and Science instruction is provided by Mr. Gesing. Just like students did in third grade, they will move between my room and Mr. Gesing’s room to receive instruction throughout the day. If you have questions about math and science, please contact Mr. Gesing at kgesing@alcsny.org.
Here is some information about the 4th grade school year:
ELA and Social Studies
Students will receive a weekly packet of review work on Monday and it will be due that Friday for a grade. I technically call it “homework”, but students will have a lot of time to work on it throughout the school day. They are more than welcome to bring it home and work on it as well. As long as it’s turned in by Friday. 😊
Students will also receive a spelling sheet each week. The sheet will contain ten words, but a bonus word may be tossed in there from time to time. Students will receive the list each Monday and they will have a spelling test that Friday. This is subject to change with holidays and shorter weeks, but the test date will always be noted on that week’s spelling sheet.
Specials Schedule:

Phys. Ed
Students are no longer required to change for gym class this year, but please be mindful of the days your student has Phys. Ed. They will still need to wear sneakers on those days.
Communication
Green Take Home Folder: The left side of the folder holds papers to Return to School. This is where students will put their homework, papers, or notes that need to be returned the following day. The right side of the folder holds papers to keep at home. Please try to empty this side out each night!
Lunch Money and Snack
Lunch Money: Lunch and breakfast are now free to each student. If your student plans to buy extra lunch, ice cream, or milk they will need lunch money. Please put money on your child’s lunch account or send it in with them. When you send lunch money in with your child, they will put it in the assigned bucket, and it will be taken down to the cafeteria that morning. Please be sure to send in their money in a closed envelope/baggie/etc. labeled with their name. You can check your child’s lunch account balance or add money on their account on Power School for Parents/Students on the school website.
Snack: Each child is responsible for their own snack every day. I do keep a supply on hand for the occasional forgotten snack though. Our classroom loves any extra snacks families may want to send in.
Water Bottles
All children are allowed to bring a water bottle to keep at their desks. Please make sure it can be closed tightly to avoid spills. I will remind students to bring them home regularly to be cleaned.
Parties
We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday! Please just give me a heads up when you plan to send a goodie in. If the treat requires plates or silverware, please send those in too as I don’t keep them on hand. We currently have 22 students in our class this year.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time! We are going to have a fun and exciting year in 4th grade!
